1406

The painting “Eva” (1928) by the Belarusian artist Chaim Soutine, was bought at Sotheby’s auction in 2013 and was brought to Belarus thanks to the efforts of one of the currently imprisoned Viktor Babarika. Since 2011, the bank run by Babarika has bought more than 100 artifacts of Belarusian-born artists from abroad and has built a collection. However, after Babarico’s arrest, the collection was confiscated. 1406 is the date the paintings were “arrested” and removed from the museum. The purpose of the film: to show what the paintings would have looked like if they had had to serve their time at the Okrestina prison. The stories of the pictures will be intertwined with the detentions of the Belarusians and the destruction of their cultural life. This film was created in collaboration with a Belarussian artist, whose name is hidden under the pseudonym “Ivan Ivanov” for her safety.
